How to Calculate Flooring Material Needed
Flooring estimates start with the floor area. A waste percentage can then be added to account for cuts, layout and damaged pieces.
How to calculate it
- Measure the room length and width.
- Calculate floor area by multiplying length × width.
- Choose a realistic waste allowance for the installation.
- Multiply the area by 1 + waste percentage divided by 100.
- Round up to the package quantity required by the product.
Formula
Required flooring = length × width × (1 + waste% ÷ 100).
Example
For a 20 ft × 15 ft room with 10% waste, the estimate is 20 × 15 × 1.10 = 330 square feet.
Important notes
- Complex room shapes should be split into simpler areas.
- Follow the flooring manufacturer's installation guidance for expansion gaps and layout.
- Package sizes differ, so the final purchase quantity may need to be rounded to full boxes.
Before ordering materials
Use measurements from the actual project whenever possible and keep all dimensions in compatible units. Material coverage, yield, density, package size, waste, compaction, cuts, overlaps, and site conditions can affect the quantity that must be purchased.
The calculation on this page is intended as a transparent estimating method. Compare the result with manufacturer instructions, supplier ordering units, project drawings, and applicable local requirements before placing an order.
