Tile Calculator
Estimate the number of tiles required for a floor or wall.
Calculation example
Inputs: Area: 1000 sq ft, Tile Length: 12 in, Tile Width: 12 in, Waste %: 10 %
Result: 1100 tiles
For 1,000 square feet using 12 by 12 inch tiles with 10% waste, the estimate is 1,100 tiles.
Formula
Tiles needed = area × 144 ÷ (tile length × tile width) × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100), rounded up.
How to use this calculator
Divide the total area by the area of one tile, add the waste percentage, then round up.
Before you calculate
Measure the project dimensions as accurately as practical and keep all measurements in compatible units. For material products, use the coverage, yield, density, or package size stated by the manufacturer or supplier rather than a generic assumption.
Choose the waste allowance based on the project shape, installation method, cutting requirements, and material characteristics. A simple rectangular estimate may need adjustment for openings, corners, slopes, joints, patterns, compaction, or other site conditions.
Understanding the result
The calculator provides a planning estimate based on the inputs shown above. It is not a substitute for project drawings, structural design, manufacturer instructions, or local requirements. Before ordering, compare the calculated quantity with the supplier's package sizes and ordering units.
Tips
- Use actual tile dimensions when they differ from nominal dimensions.
- Keep spare tiles for future repairs when practical.
Frequently asked questions
How are tiles counted?
Area is divided by tile area, waste is added, then the result is rounded up.
Should actual tile size be used?
Yes, when it differs from nominal dimensions.
